JERUSALEM—A conundrum is a problem without a solution.
We expect government to deal with conundrums. We are usually unhappy with what the government does. If we are honest, we admit that we do not know a better way. Among the well known conundrums that affect several countries:
Wars that have no end game that is acceptable.
Problems of health, poverty, and inadequate housing, transportation, and other infrastructure that cannot be dealt with by the technology or resources available. Populations mired in broken families, poverty, and crime, despite one government effort after another, and great expenditures. Illegal immigration, supported by great push from poor societies that supply the people, and a reluctance of the receiving countries to do without cheap labor for jobs viewed as undesirable by its citizens.
One of the conundrums currently on Israel's agenda is Gaza. Its components are: •A regime governed by religious fanatics, convinced of their refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist. •The regime's capacity to threaten Israelis living close to Gaza with rocket and mortar attacks, and efforts at incursion by armed gangs.
•The lack of complete control by the primary group in Gaza--Hamas--over groups that compete with it for public support and the righteousness of their actions against Israel. • The cost in human lives, primarily of Israeli soldiers but also of Palestinian civilians, that would be incurred by a massive Israeli retaliation. • The cost in international condemnation and the possibility of economic sanctions in response to Israel's use of great force, especially that which would cost the lives of many civilians, or in response to Israel's use of its control over Gaza to limit supplies of food, fuel, electricity, water, and other necessities. •The temporary palliative of massive force or blockade, not likely to produce a cessation of hostilities for more than a limited time. •The costs and frustrations of military conquest and prolonged occupation of a hostile population. •The importance of Egypt and other Arab regimes in international affairs, and the reluctance of Israel to pursue actions beyond their capacity to tolerate them. •The existence of an Israeli prisoner in Gaza, and problems in arranging his release or visits with him by humanitarian organizations.
In recent days a fragile cease fire, or vaguely defined period of quiet, has been spoiled, at least temporarily, by violence from both sides. Again the residents of Sderot, Ashkelon, and other localities are threatened with rockets and mortars. They demand that the government act to stop the attacks, or provide them with the means to harden their homes, schools, and other public facilities against the missiles.
Once again, the politicians in the government and the senior officers in the IDF are arguing and dithering about their options. It does not help that we are in the process of an election campaign, with politicians calculating the votes to be gained by a posture that is either aggressive or accommodating. Some politicians demand an apocalyptic response. Others caution overreaction. There is also the lame duck prime minister, spending some of his time being investigated by the police, and some of his time making proclamations that his colleagues are reluctant to support.
The response of politicians to demands that they provide the resources to protect Israelis from missiles is that the solution to the problem of Sderot and other localities is not in them, but in Gaza. Some may mean that the solution will come with an invasion. Others may mean that the solution will come with an agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Most recently the prime minister ordered the IDF to produce a plan for dealing with Gaza.
Someone senior in the IDF reminded the media, once again, that there already exists several plans in the hands of the government. The problem is not the lack of plans, but the inability of the government to decide.
The government and IDF are likely to respond, as in the past, with a little of this, and a little of that. There will be days without supplies going into Gaza, and limited attacks.
If those actions do not produce a reduction in the missiles, there will be other suggestions.
There will also be visits to Sderot, Ashkelon, and other localities by ranking politicians and soldiers who offer sympathy and support, but not immediate or complete relief.
That is a conundrum, and there are efforts to cope without producing greater problems.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The United States and Iraq have signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) that will govern the presence of American troops in Iraq after the UN Mandate ends on 31 December. Coming to terms was a long and messy process, as befits a country unaccustomed to international diplomacy and rightly prickly about sovereignty issues, working with a country that has troops in harm's way on behalf of securing precisely that sovereignty.
SOFAs, for example, are generally non-public, Executive agreements. The Iraqi prime minister however, concerned over the appearance of secrecy, decided to make it public and have it passed by the Iraqi parliament. The cabinet voted 26-1 to recommend passage, and the vote in parliament is scheduled for 24 November.
With the negotiation and the document largely public, neither side had much room for maneuver. The Iraqis demanded a date for withdrawal, first from the cities and then from the country; no permanent American bases; and a pledge not to use Iraq to attack any other country (i.e., Iran). When JINSA met privately in the fall with a State Department official close to the talks, he said the United States would probably end up giving Iraq more in a SOFA than almost any other country. And that, he said, would be acceptable as long as the United States red line was respected.
The red line, he said, was the Iraqi demand to prosecute purported crimes committed by U.S. troops and civilians, including while on duty. That, according to the official, would be a "complete non-starter." Well, not exactly. The United States has, according to news reports, agreed to lift the immunity of soldiers and civilians if they commit crimes off-duty and off their bases. That stands as a big concern for us - and, we assume, for the American military - as the possibility of political arrests and "show trials" for the benefit of one party or another cannot be discounted at this stage of Iraq's political and judicial development. We will be watching that point closely.
On the whole, however, the agreement is testimony to the determination of the United States to create a new legal framework for supporting the continued development of a stable Iraq with a government operating in the name of its people. Admittedly, there was part of us that wanted to say to them, "How ungracious of you - hundreds of thousands of American servicemen and women sacrificed on behalf of your liberation and political development - whether you asked them to or not. Too many of them came home scarred for life and far too many didn't come home at all. If you're so determined to have us go, we'll just leave. You try to run this thing by yourself and take the consequences."
But that would have been shortsighted. Iraq, involuntarily, became a test bed for the proposition that consensual government can grow in the Muslim Middle East and a test bed for American resolve. Thus far, we and the Iraqis have withstood the war, the Coalition Provisional Authority, the fight for a constitution and elections. We have battled an almost-civil-war and the depredations of people who would kill, maim and die to enforce the lifestyle of al Qaeda and Iran on traditionally secular Iraqis. We and the Iraqis have done the surge and continued reconstruction and seen the return of Arab ambassadors to Baghdad. Now we have overcome Iranian intention to derail the SOFA. And the Iraqi government is still here and we are still there.
Between now and December 2011, Iraq will have setbacks and we will wonder about our investment. But if people across the Middle East are to believe that there is something for them other than a choice between secular repression and religious repression, it will be found in the progress in Iraq - and in the success of the SOFA.

DELRAY BEACH, Florida—Despite the constant barrage of false noise, Republican Jews proved to be a tiny minority. As I predicted in my last column, Obama captured 78 percent of the Jewish vote.
Obama’s first action as President-elect was to appoint as chief of his White House staff Rahm Emanuel, a Chicago congressman who held dual Israeli-American citizenship until he gave up Israeli citizenship at age 18.
The chief strategist of Obama’s campaign, David Axelrod, is Rahm Emanuel’s chum. He was given the honor of witnessing Emanuel’s marriage ketuba.
The President-elect has repeatedly proclaimed his support for Israel and he promises to protect its security.
All of these facts mean nothing to the anti-Obama Jewish bloggers. They are right and we, the 78 percent of American Jews who voted for Obama, are wrong, and we will soon find out how wrong we were.
One of them goes under the name of Agbenjamin. He or she has been sending out at least one. and some days two, anti-Obama scribbles. When he runs out of vitriol he quotes Arlene Kushner, an American residing in Jerusalem, who is more violent than he is.
On November 10 Benjamin wrote: “They still don’t know the damage they’ve done. Both fuel and electricity will skyrocket in the weeks following the coronation in January. And this will come in the midst of one of the worst winters in decades.”
Predicting the weather two months from now is easy for an anti-Obama blogger.
The facts are that oil prices have tumbled in anticipation of Obama fulfilling his campaign promise of concentrating on massive development of solar and wind power. Benjamin predicts a large price increase because, he says, Obama will ban drilling. He will not. We will still need oil, Obama says.
On November 11, Benjamin circulated an obscure AP story headed: “Georgia congressman warns of Obama dictatorship.” On November 12 he sent out a link to another story but my computer couldn’t find it. I expect there will be another soon.
What do the tens of thousands of Americans residing in Israel think of Obama? We suspect it’s the same as their family members in the United States, but we can’t prove it.
CNN claimed that over 70 percent of Americans in Israel voted for McCain. This figure came from a straw poll organized by a recent immigrant who polled his Orthodox friends. The Economist, a British weekly that the secular Jews read, took a poll of its readers that resulted in 72 percent for Obama.
The Arabs greeted Obama’s election with caution. The Damascus blog in Syria wrote: “Dare we hope that the eight-year nightmare is over?”
The Egyptian Chronicle editorialized: “The Egyptian people are glad that Obama won despite his bias towards Israel and his vice-president is a Zionist. Still they are happy because they can’t stand the Republicans any more. Good for the Americans.”
The Jewish anti-Obamists have been joined in the attack by anti-Israel polemicists who have labeled Rahm Emanuel the son of a Jewish terrorist, His father Dr. Bernard Emanuel, a leading Chicago pediatrician, in his youth was a member of the Irgun.
Dr. Bernard Emanuel was born in Jerusalem. He emigrated to Chicago after the state was born. But prior to the state he had joined the Irgun He says that he was a simple soldier and that he never met Menachem Begin.
The underground Irgun fought the British government of Palestine by blowing up bridges and government installations. Their crowning achievement was to blow up the west wing of the King David Hotel which was occupied by the British Government. Many more Jewish workers were killed than their British bosses.
As the first director of Americans for Haganah in 1947 I was in the business of combating these Jewish terrorists.
After Israel was born in 1948 the terrorists became good citizens and leaders of the people. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister and candidate for Prime Minister Tsipi Livni are both children of leading Irgunists.
Dr. Bernard Emanuel came to Chicago, married Martha Shulevitz and fathered three boys two years apart. Rahm was the middle son. He was the mediator when the eldest and the youngest fought, says his mother.
Bernard taught his boys Hebrew and sent them to summer camp in Israel. When the boys were teenagers he and Martha, who had always wanted a girl, adopted the infant daughter of a patient. The baby had been brain damaged at birth.
Rahm entered politics as a fund-raiser for Mayor Daley of Chicago. He was President Clinton’s chief fund-raiser for six years,
He left the white House two years before the end of Clinton’s second term to become director of a finance company that arranged mergers and acquisitions.
His income for the two and a half years that he was in business was over $16 million, according to his disclosure to Congress. He ran for Congress four times beginning in 2002 garnering over 70 percent of the vote in every election.
He supported Hillary Clinton for president until his fellow Chicagoan, Barack Obama, announced his candidacy and asked for his help. He told a reporter he was hiding under his desk but he emerged and joined the campaign.
Obama gave him another difficult choice when he asked him to be the White House chief of staff. He has to give up his seat in Congress, where he has become a leader in the Democratic caucus.
His wife, Amy, and their three children, who are attending the same Jewish day school that he went to, will lose their close friends in Chicago and will have to establish new roots in Washington.
Rahm Emanuel has maintained contact with Bill Clinton. He talks to Bill about once a month. Eight years ago, towards the end of his second term, Bill Clinton proposed an Israeli-Palestinian settlement, which still remains on the table. It is a two-state solution, which, more or less, evenly divides Jerusalem.
After eight years of lackadaisical incompetence, it will be good to have a team of knowledgeable people discussing how Israel should handle the settlers in the West Bank and bring to fruition
two viable states living side by side in peace and tranquility.

The Jews Of Sing Sing traces the lives
of some not-so-nice Jewish boys
LA JOLLA, California—Ron Arons, an engineer and former marketing executive in the software industry who has been tracing his genealogical roots for the past ten years, delivered a fascinating lecture on his revealing new book, The Jews of Sing Sing, to an attentive audience at last week's San Diego Jewish Book Fair.
How did he become interested in the Jewish inmates of Sing Sing? "It may sound trite," wrote Arons, "but I truly think it was beshert."
When Arons was an adult, both of his parents had died of cancer within 18 months, which caused him to sink into a depression. During his depression, he and his brother went to their childhood home where they found a pile of papers, amongst them a family tree that their father had started, as well as birth and marriage certificates. As Arons looked them over, he noticed that he had a great-grandfather who asserted that he had been born in three different places. This piqued his curiosity, which led him to research the life of his great-grandfather.
During his research, Arons discovered that his great-grandfather was sentenced to four years in Sing Sing prison for bigamy. His subsequent research on Jewish inmates during the early days of Sing Sing uncovered some very interesting, sad, and deplorable characters. For example, Isaac Zucker, who immigrated to New York City from Poland, worked in hardware. Two years later, he moved with his family to Philadelphia where he became a shoemaker. Then back to Manhattan to be a tailor. He found a buddy, Morris Schoenholz, who had also immigrated from Poland, and because of poor English skills, became a peddler. The buddies were arrested for arson, and the judge had no mercy when the jury pronounced them guilty.
In Sing Sing they had the company of quite a few "Macho" Jews who belonged to gangs, Jews with nicknames describing a prominent part of their physique or a character trait. Almost all of their criminal acts were felonies.
Arons also devotes a chapter to the Jews of Sing Sing who were convicted of Prohibition-era crimes.
At the end of the book there are several charts of interest. After many years of researching and writing his book, Arons won a Larry J. Hackman Research Residency Program grant from the New York State Archives.
He earned a B.S. in engineering from Princeton University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. In January 2008 he appeared on the PBS television series The Jewish Americans as the resident expert on Jewish criminals who lived on the Lower East side of Manhattan.

SAN DIEGO—The 150 stirring Psalms teach simplicity of heart, faith in God, good conduct, and have been on the lips of more people throughout the centuries than any other written compositions. The Psalms express the moods of the human heart: religious ideas, epic poetry, idealism of the Prophets, love of wisdom, and the role of God in our lives. Psalms were an important part of worship in the ancient Temple on Mount Zion, and were sung by Levitical choirs with specified melodies and instrumental accompaniment (described in the Book of Chronicles). To add authority to the 150 psalms, tradition ascribed them primarily to King David, Moses, Solomon and others, but the real authors were the people of Israel expressing its growth and emerging spirituality through the centuries.
The popularity of the Psalms played a significant role in the development of our prayer books. One needs only to turn through the pages of our prayer books to find complete psalms or a mosaic of psalm verses as part of our worship services. Indeed the Book of Psalms is our hymn book, poetry book, and prayer book- all in one.
Composer, Michael Isaacson, brings new depth of meaning and drama to the words he chose from Psalm One. His composition has received considerable acclaim in concerts, and in synagogue’s sermon-in –song presentations.
Here are excerpts from Psalm One, verses 1, 2, 3
"Happy is the man who delights in the Torah of the Lord, and day and night meditates in God's Torah. He is like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaves never fade. And all that he does prospers."
Ashrei ha-ish asher cha-feytz b’torat Adonai,
Happy is the man who delights in the Torah of the Lord V’yo-mam va-laila ho-geh b’torato
And day and night meditates God’s Torah. V’haya k’eitz sha-tul al pal-gey mayim
And he shall be like a tree planted by streams of water. Asher pir-yo yi-tein b’ito, v’a-ley-hu lo yi-bol,
That brings forth fruit in season, and whose leaves wither not. V’chol a-sher ya-a-she yatz-le-ach
And all that he does prospers.
The word, ash-rey, (happy) is often used in the book of Psalms, describing righteousness and trust in God: Psalm 2:12, 33:1, 94:12 and 119:1.
“Meditate day and night”, compare this with Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (also in the V’ah-hav-ta prayer): “These words, which I command thee …. Thou shalt talk of them… when thou liest down, and when thou rises up.”
“Like a tree planted by steams of water”, the same metaphor is used by the Prophet Jeremiah 17:8, and elsewhere in the Torah and prayer book: “aytz chayim hee," also described as a tree of life.

Beth Jacob Congregation Southwestern Jewish Press, April 28, 1950, page 12
The regular monthly meeting of Beth Jacob Congregation will take place Tuesday, May 2, 1950 at Beth Jacob Center, 3206 Myrtle street. President A.A. Abramson will call the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m.
In addition to the regular business on the agenda that evening, a complete up-to-the-minute report on the progress of the building f the new synagogue and center will be made by Building Chairman Morrie Kraus. The construction program is progressing satisfactorily and Mr. Kraus will report in detail on this program as well as on any necessary small changes that may have to be made in converting the blueprints to an actual building.
Another important point of business will be voting on Rabbi Baruch Stern’s contract. A report will be brought in by the Executive Board on their discussion of this matter.
Refreshments will be served at the close of the business session. President , Mr. Abramson, extends an invitation to all members to be present at this very important meeting.
Daily Minyan—Mornings 7:00 a.m.; Evenings 6:090 p.m. Study of Mishnah—Daily at 5:30 p.m. Before Evening Service Rabbi Stern lectures on Mishnah from 5:30 to 6;00 p.m.
At regular Sabbath Services last Saturday morning special services celebrating the second Anniversary of the rebirth of the State of Israel prayers appropriate to the occasion were recited.
Men’s Club—The temporary officers of the newly formed beth Jacob Men’s Club are working on a program of activity for this group which will start off with the Fall season in early September.
Material is being gathered by Chairman Arthur Gordon; Secretary Dr. Joseph A. Kwint and Treasurer Sidney Weiss will help outline a program devoted to sociability and good fellowship among the members.
Charter membership in this new organization is still open and will be until June 1, 1950.
Mr. Gordon cordially invites all young men to become affiliated with the Beth Jacob Men’s Club. A call to any of the officers or particularly to Mr. Gordon at F-8-7101 will bring any additional. Mr. Gordon stresses the fact that potential members of the Men’s Club need not be members of the Beth Jacob Congregation.
A meeting of this group is being planned in the near future, the exact date to be announced shortly.
P.T.A. and Religious School—At the last regular meeting of the Beth Jacob P.T.A. election of new officers for the coming year was held with the following officers to take charge when the P.T.A. group reconvenes in the Fall: Dr. J. H. Lipitt, President; Joseph Pfeffer, Vice-President; Mrs. Sidney Weiss, Secretary; and Mrs. Arthur Gordon, Treasurer.
A report on the highly successful Cabaret Nite given by the P.T.A. recently, was also made by the affiar’s chairman, Mrs. Max Stotland. She thanked her committee for their splendid cooperation and was herslf commended for the outstanding piece of work she did to insure the success of the party.
The last meeting of the season will be held Monday evening, May 1st, at the Beth Jacob Center, 3206 Myrtle Street at 8:00 p.m. Presiding will be President Jerry Weisman, who is bringing to a close a very successful season of the group’s activities. Discussion will center on the coming children’s picnic which the P.T.A. sponsors for the Sunday and Religious School children at the close of the season in the middle of May.
Plans will also be formulated for social activities for members of the P.T.A. for summer get-togethers.
Mr. Weisman urges all members of the P.T. A. to attend the meeting to help plan these activities and to take an active part in the coming Fall plans.

The Temple Youth League of Congregation Beth Israel announces two splendid social events in the immediate future.
On Saturday, May 6th, at 7 p.m., T.Y.L. will have a barbecue-House Party at the home of Herb Solomon, President. The address is 3575 Pershing avenue. This is not a “date” affair, and all young people of High School age are warmly invited to attend this evening of fun. Special guests of honor will be this year’s Confirmation Class, who become eligible for T.Y.L. membership.
On Saturday evening, May 13th at 8:30, the Temple Youth League will be host to the young people of the community at a May Dance. A splendid floor show, and music by Bobby Lloyd’s Band will be features of the evening. Refreshments will be served. There will be a nominal charge of 25 cents per person, and the affair is “stag-or-drag.” T.Y.L. urges all young people of High School age to attend this lovely dance at the Temple Center.
Want a wonderful week of camping at Lake Tahoe? The 4th annual Jewish Youth Conference camp, sponsored by the Western Association of Reform Rabbis, will be held July 24-30. JERUSALEM—
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The United States and Iraq have signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) that will govern the presence of American troops in Iraq after the UN Mandate ends on 31 December. Coming to terms was a long and messy process, as befits a country unaccustomed to international diplomacy and rightly prickly about sovereignty issues, working with a country that has troops in harm's way on behalf of securing precisely that sovereignty.
SAN DIEGO—The first grade classes at Hebrew Day have concluded their unit on Earth. They studied the layers of the Earth (including the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core) and volcanoes. Using baking soda, vinegar and red food coloring, students witnessed volcanic eruptions many times over! The classes also participated in The Great Southern California Shake Out which fit nicely into the Earth unit.

SAN DIEGO—The 150 stirring Psalms teach simplicity of heart, faith in God, good conduct, and have been on the lips of more people throughout the centuries than any other written compositions. The Psalms express the moods of the human heart: religious ideas, epic poetry, idealism of the Prophets, love of wisdom, and the role of God in our lives. Psalms were an important part of worship in the ancient Temple on Mount Zion, and were sung by Levitical choirs with specified melodies and instrumental accompaniment (described in the Book of Chronicles). To add authority to the 150 psalms, tradition ascribed them primarily to King David, Moses, Solomon and others, but the real authors were the people of Israel expressing its growth and emerging spirituality through the centuries.
